Fear of risk, boredom, or loneliness… Many remain hesitant about the idea of traveling alone. Conversely, some speak of addiction. Once you've tried it, it seems you can't help but want more.
Planning your dream trip with a friend who cancels at the last minute, or not finding anyone to go with, leaves you with two choices: cancel your trip or face the fear of the unknown by deciding to travel alone. While this adventure may seem daunting, it is nonetheless rich in lessons.
– You'll never be bored, you'll be forced to interact with others and will meet many people. You'll probably share part of your stay with them.
– You will go and meet the locals. Or rather, they will come to you when they see you alone. They will invite you to their homes and offer you their hospitality.
– Traveling alone can allow you to discover places from a different perspective. You'll have the time to sit and observe at your leisure the people, the sky, the surroundings, the life around you…
– Travelling alone allows you to plan nothing, without asking anyone's opinion, you do whatever you like at any time during your stay.
– You will especially avoid the risk of speaking your native language and you will thus improve the target language.
Nevertheless, travelling alone involves rules that should not be ignored:
– As in your country of residence, the risk of having your belongings stolen is just as present. It is advisable not to let your guard down
– Certain times of day (late at night) or certain places should sometimes be avoided. Be sure to check beforehand.
– Every country has laws that may differ from those in Belgium. Check the local laws before you leave or once you arrive (especially regarding alcohol consumption and minimum age).
– When you travel to a country, it is important to respect local customs.
Traveling alone will allow you to meet new people, broaden your horizons, and boost your self-confidence. It's a unique experience, but also a journey of self-discovery and exploration of your own limits. And since traveling alone also involves potential risks, it's best to remain cautious and respectful .
"Traveling solo is the most intimidating, liberating, and life-changing experience you will ever have."
After an au pair stay in the Netherlands, a year in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa , and a trip to Southeast Asia, I continued my desire to explore the world by studying in Scotland. My studies were punctuated by university exchanges in Mexico and Italy, as well as numerous trips throughout Europe. Graduating in the midst of the pandemic, I worked for an NGO before spending eight months in Canada and Latin America. Today, I offer my experience to you at Languages & Travel, with particular expertise in Australia, Latin America, Italy, and Scotland.
