Going to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa is an unforgettable experience… but after working, it's important to understand how taxes work in Australia . Whether you're already there or about to return to Belgium, here's everything you need to know to manage your tax situation stress-free.
Since January 2017, holders of a Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) are subject to the Backpacker Tax .
The following rates will apply in 2025:
From 0 to 45,000 AUD of annual income : 15% tax.
Above AUD 45,000 : 32.5% for the next bracket, then 37% and 45% for very high incomes.
💡 In practical terms, for the majority of Working Holiday Visa holders who earn between 5,000 and 35,000 AUD per year, taxation therefore remains at 15 %.
Please note: this rate is only valid if you provide your social security number (which you will obtain via our job assistance upon your arrival) to your employer.
Super -cancellation is a type of mandatory retirement benefit paid by Australian employers for their employees, including Working Holiday Visa holders.
Contribution rate 2025: 11% of gross salary (paid in addition to salary)
These funds are locked until retirement... except for holders of temporary visas like the Working Holiday Visa!
✅ Good news: at the end of your stay, you can request a refund of your Supercancellation fee (minus a departure tax). Our job assistance partner will help you with the process of recovering this amount.
Filing a tax return is mandatory , even for backpackers. It must be done between July and October , for the previous tax year (July 1st - June 30th), and our job assistance service will support you throughout this process.
💬 Tip : even if you have returned to Belgium, you must file your tax return!
The Tax File Number (TFN) is the equivalent of your personal tax number in Australia.
It is essential for:
Working legally
To be taxed at the reduced rate of 15%
File your tax return
Claim any tax refunds you may be entitled to
❗ Without a TFN (Tax File Number), you would automatically be taxed at 45% on your salaries!
Obtaining a TFN is free and quite simple. Our job assistance team will explain everything to you once you arrive; you will need a bank account number, which we will help you obtain before your departure.
🛬 You must already be in Australia to apply. That's why VisaVacancesTravail.be guides you through the process as soon as you arrive, so you can start working quickly.
At the end of your Working Holiday Visa, you can get a partial tax refund if you have:
Paid too much tax relative to your income
Worked less than a year
Or left the country before the end of the fiscal year
💰 What can you recover?
A tax refund (partial or total)
Your accumulated Supercancellation
Like the rest of the administrative procedures, this one is included in all our packages thanks to our job assistance service
🎯 Important : Even if you have already returned to Belgium, you can still start the process!
